Recognizing when to start an MTSS process

To evaluate their readiness to implement an MTSS process, schools need to take into account various factors. These include:

  • Staff buy-in: MTSS is a complex and demanding process that requires the buy-in of all staff members. Schools should assess the level of staff readiness and support for MTSS.
  • Time: MTSS takes time to implement and sustain. Schools should assess whether they have the time and resources to commit to MTSS, including the time to schedule regular meetings.
  • Data: MTSS is data driven. Schools should assess whether they have the data systems and capacity to collect and use data effectively.
  • Collaboration: MTSS is a collaborative process that requires the involvement of a variety of stakeholders, including teachers, administrators, parents, and community members. Schools should assess whether they have the capacity to collaborate effectively.
  • Training: MTSS requires training for all staff members. Schools should assess whether they have the resources to provide training on MTSS.
  • Allocations: MTSS team requires that we assess our current allocations for resource positions and how their roles are being used.

If a school lacks the capacity to begin the process, they should consider building capacity in those areas first.
